Because commercial printing is fundamentally a volume business, it requires a considerable investment in the acquisition, maintenance, and replacement of industrial grade equipment and supplies. Additionally, commercial printing technicians must be continuously re-trained with highly specialized skills. This is especially true given the advent of digital printing, which can now process full color, high quality, short run jobs in less time than (and for a fraction of the cost of) traditional offset techniques. Also, modern commercial printing has become subdivided into several areas of specialty, so not every commercial printing establishment is going to be suited for every project type.
